Connecting Kids to Communities: The SlamCamp Model for Using Writing as a Way to Tackle Real Issues

Bethany Lee, Assistant Professor of English and Sarah White, Clinical Assistant Professor of English & Composition Coordinator, Purdue Northwest

This workshop discusses some of the methods by which SlamCamp, a writing and arts day camp for middle schoolers co-developed by a library and a university, uses creative activities to encourage children to examine community issues in personal and meaningful ways. Attendees will participate in a sample camp activity and have an opportunity to brainstorm ways to apply this model within their own organizations.
