Throughout the presentation, the construct of community-engaged teacher preparation will be offered as a compelling and justifiable direction for the field.

In this session, we provide concrete tools for how to organize critical service-learning (CSL) courses by aligning and integrating CSL course goals, learner outcomes, objectives, activities, and assessments with other discipline-specific course content. We present CSL course development through a social justice framework in which we discuss how to situate positionality at the forefront to ensure – to the greatest degree possible – equitable power relations between all stakeholders. This parity is key to sustainable, mutually-beneficial projects.

Individuals who participate in this session will be introduced to Conversation Cafes as one model of civil discourse that has been adopted on the campus of Saint Mary’s Campus. The session will include a brief background, participation in an abbreviated conversation cafe, and then a short wrap-up/debrief. Afterward, each participant should feel comfortable with the ability to both plan and facilitate a Conversation Cafe on their own campus - and present it as one model for civil discourse.

This workshop will explore ways anthropological methodologies can be applied to examine real life issues. We will explore how these techniques have been used to address social justice concerns from homelessness to healthcare. We will learn and practice techniques such as participant observation and free listing through activities like roleplaying and group discussions. Participants will leave with a basic “ethnographic toolkit” on how anthropology can be used in their lives, work and passions.

While it is easy to disagree, it is hard to disagree respectfully and engage in critical thinking through dialogue. This team believes that university professors and students need to partner with local libraries and schools to teach children the lost art of democratic argument. The presenters will facilitate a community of inquiry session, as they have been doing with elementary children. This method has been applied to flipped-classroom teaching and community activism. They will provide handouts outlining this method along with online resources with Philosophy for Children lesson plans.

In fall of 2016, third year planting design students facilitated community meetings using the appreciative inquiry process, conducted site analyses, and developed a master plan for the St. Peter’s Church grounds. This relationship has spanned two years and served two different design courses, each with projects of differing scales of design. This session will give an overview of how the relationship was established and the details of the projects. Presenters will give perspectives from the client, the professor of the course, and students.

Researchers will share national data on student food insecurity and their progress to date on campus and community asset mapping at regional Indiana University campuses in Gary, Kokomo, New Albany, and South Bend. Survey instruments for student food access and insecurity will be shared. Discussion of grass-roots organizing strategies for students to solve this open problem for themselves and their communities.

The guide includes an overview of service-learning, guidelines for professionalism, strategies for working with community partners, step-by-step instructions for assignments, prompts for reflection, and information about writing grants to support projects.
