Phase 3: How to Generate Direct or Indirect Artifacts of Students’ Civic Learning or Development- Reflection and other Processes of Service-learning or Community Engagement Activities
April 7 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Event Navigation
During this time together we will unpack the process that is service-learning and community-based or –engaged experiences and how to generate artifacts from your students that demonstrate (either directly or indirectly) their civic learning or development, throughout that process. Often we wait to ask students to demonstrate their learning from a community-based or –engaged experience toward the end of that activity. This, however, means that we may be missing other opportunities or points in the process- identifying a community need, working with community partners and/or fellow classmates, tying together course material and service/volunteer experiences, etc.- that generate deep and meaningful learning and development. Recognizing that process or design matters for student’s civic learning and development is a key part of discussion that is missing from our field. After this discussion, participants will take part in activities that help them not only appreciate the types of learning occurring (cognitive, affective, kinesthetic) but how to generate assignments and therefore artifacts that can be measured for this growth and/or learning. For example, participants will spend some time focused on writing and receiving feedback for generating reflection prompts that target the learning or development you are after. At other times we will discuss how to utilize community partners as co-educators in the process of generating student artifacts of civic learning and democratic engagement. Participation in a prior workshop regarding how to write, map, and/or measure specific civic outcomes with your course or program’s curriculum or activities is highly encouraged (See Phase 1 & Phase 2 )
