PHASE 1: Foundational Practices in Assessing Civic Learning and Development

November 11, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

In this workshop participants will begin with the end in mind (i.e., backwards design). Participants will be introduced to the plethora of civic outcomes (working with others, civic communication, civic knowledge or literacy, intercultural competence, etc.) available for guiding course or program curriculum, assessment activities, and therefore, students’ civic learning and development.

After this overview, participants will engage in activities to map civic outcomes across their course, program, curriculum, department, or work area.

Finally, attendees will engage in a fast-paced but important activity to stimulate the drafting of measurable, specific, meaningful, and timely civic learning outcome statements for your course or program.

Throughout our time together we will discuss the importance of aligning and defining civic learning goals, objectives, and outcomes for participants of your community-based or –engaged activities (i.e., course or program) with your course or program’s activities.
