Ball State University Faculty Member Becomes Part of Community Engagement Cohort Chronicling
HBCUs’ Efforts to Build Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Teams

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Dr. Adam J. Kuban, Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism and the inaugural Ball Brothers Foundation Honors College Faculty Fellow at Ball State University was awarded a Faculty Fellowship from Indiana Campus Compact, a partnership of higher education intuitions that prepares college students to advance the public good. The Fellowship includes funding to support high-impact teaching, research, and engagement practices. As part of the cohort, they will work on a collaborative research project with other Faculty Fellows from across the state, and individual projects, which in Dr. Kuban’s case will be creating a documentary sequel to his 2019 documentary Match Point: The Rise of Men’s Volleyball. While the first documentary was created to emphasize the growth of the sport across the country, Match Point II will chronicle the effort to build collegiate men’s volleyball teams at six historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) with the intent to engage potential donors in this national, nonprofit organization, attract new members to the volleyball community, and appeal to minority youth who may be considering participation in the sport.

In his application, Dr. Kuban said, “Many of these students will likely pursue occupations in the sports realm after graduation, and I hope that this experience will influence how they report, who they interview, what questions they ask, and why, as media practitioners, they have inherent power in the content they generate.”

Ball State University is adding $1,500 to the $3,800 Faculty Fellows grant from Indiana Campus Compact which highlights their commitment to community engagement and to prepare students to advance the common good.

“We are excited to have Dr. Kuban join the Indiana Campus Compact family of Faculty Fellows,” commented Laura Weaver, Indiana Campus Compact’s Director of Professional Development and Engaged Learning. “Dr. Kuban’s course and partnership with First Point Volleyball Foundation and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is an incredible opportunity for Ball State students to step beyond what they may have experienced previously, and to interrogate their own biases and understandings. This project will have a lasting, positive impact on the students who are involved and the students who the documentary hopes to reach.”

Dr. Kuban is one of five Faculty Fellows being supported by Indiana Campus Compact during the 2020-2021 academic year.

“Indiana Campus Compact is proud to be supporting innovators like Dr. Kuban in creating programs to prepare college students as the next generation of civic leaders and community-minded workforce while making a positive impact on tens of thousands of Hoosiers”, says J.R. Jamison, Indiana Campus Compact Executive Director.
