| When Active Citizenry and Scholarship Collide—There’s Hope |

Pen to Paper: Writing with, for, and about Service Engagement. When the lines of being an academic and an active citizen intersect, I believe we discover something deep within ourselves that forever transitions how we educate, provide programming, research, and, at times, even write. I know this because I’ve lived at that intersection for over the past decade, and I’ve enjoyed the beauty of the vehicles that pass by me each day—some filled with faculty exploring service-learning teaching, others with community-based researchers, a few with professional staff who are making a difference in their communities. Many who have parked and live at the intersection with me. But the one thing we all struggle to do well is articulate to our peers, who live down the block in Academia Manor, that our section of the neighborhood is just as rigorous. A few failed attempts of showcasing how our work with and in communities connects to the overall mission of our institutions, divisions, departments, and disciplines—we may be asked to move. We had great projects; we just never wrote about them or didn’t write about them well. That ends today. Join Indiana Campus Compact on August 2-3, 2012, in Indianapolis, Indiana, for Pen to Paper: Writing with, for, and about Service Engagement. This two-day academic writing retreat for faculty and professional staff will provide the opportunity for you to take the time to reflect and write, discuss your ideas with colleagues, develop a plan with new insights, and learn 1-on-1 from academic publication representatives. The Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education, the Journal of Public Scholarship in Higher Education, Partnerships: A Journal of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement, and PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement have all graciously co-sponsored this retreat and will have representatives in attendance. Being an academic and an active citizen isn’t easy, so shouldn’t you be rewarded and recognized for your work? The time is now to change what your intersection will look like. Show the beauty of your work. Register today. J.R. Jamison is the Associate Director of Indiana Campus Compact. He is an educator, active citizen, and, yes, writer!
