2008 Hiltunen Award Winner: Ange Cooksey, IU East
Angie Cooksey, a Senior Lecturer in Humanities and Fine Arts from Indiana University East. Angie was nominated by Indiana University East Interim Chancellor Nasser (Nass - are) Paydar for her successful development of the Baxter Neighborhood Help Center in the Richmond, Indiana community - a full-service community help center completely run by college student volunteers. However, this is just one of Angie’s major accomplishments. She has studied service-learning pedagogy for well over 10 years, is always exploring and implementing ways in which to transform the educational experience for the college students she serves, and has been recognized as an expert service-learning scholar in the field - serving three times as an Indiana Campus Compact Faculty Fellow, twice of which was as the Senior Faculty Fellow. In her own words, she feels that, “experiential education, curriculum infusion, and excitement about teaching and learning best describe what my work is all about. . .but helping students grow and develop into productive, contributive citizens motivates my teaching. . .students are the heart of what I do and in the soul of all I know.”
In his nomination, Interim Chancellor Paydar wrote: “It is my pleasure to recommend Angie Cooksey for the Brian Douglas Hiltunen Award for the Scholarship of Engagement. Ms. Cooksey has been one of our most active faculty members in working with students on projects that engage them in the local community. Her Baxter Neighborhood Help Center initiative is a model for university civic engagement. I vouch for the quality of her efforts and their contribution to the education of the students of IU East and to the campus as a whole.”
