Stephanie Moran, Director of the Community Partnership Center, Anderson University
Do you ever find yourself wondering if the work you do on your campus has impact? Do you ever contemplate if the time and energy you put toward the effort of service and civic engagement has meaning and makes a difference? Do you try to measure how service engagement affects your campus as well as the individual student, staff, or faculty member? What about the measurable effects on the community partner?
Well I have a process and product that can assist you with positive responses to each of the above questions. No, I am not selling anything, just promoting an opportunity. The opportunity to participate in the annual awards program that Indiana Campus Compact offers to each member campus every year.
You might ask yourself, “How can an award help provide affirmation and meaning to the work of service engagement?” Well, if you have ever gone through the process and discovered the stories that exist on campus and in the community of how “service” has impacted individual learning and personal development of participants and stakeholders, you know the connection. Our campuses and communities are full of examples of impact. Last year’s Indiana Campus Compact Award Ceremony at the Service Engagement Summit gave evidence to that truth.
These awards represented the work done at many levels and through various participatory roles. (Read about the 2012 Service Engagement Award winners). Awards were presented to a staff member, a faculty member, a student, and a community partner, all of whom have accomplished notable contributions locally and globally.
Nominations are open for the various service engagement awards offered by Indiana Campus Compact. I would encourage each campus to give value to the process of nomination. You will discover just how much impact service engagement has on your campus and community. You will discover how lives were changed because of the lessons and content learned through service engagement supported by your campus. You will be blessed by seeing how the hard work of some, dramatically affects the lives of others. It is a meaningful process.
So put on your investigator’s hat, and go discover some untold stories of service engagement on your campus. Share a story of how the collaboration and support of a community partner made a difference in the lives of your students as they served. Discover some of the outstanding scholarship that goes into the service learning process. It will inspire you. It will bring recognition to faculty, staff, students, and community partners, where recognition is due. Enjoy the process!
