College Mentors for Kids 2011 Inspire Award

The University of Indianapolis, a four-year private university, strongly believes in Education for Service which permeates their academic, programmatic and campus community. The University leverages several student and faculty-led programs to offer various mentoring opportunities to its students. In addition, it capitalizes on numerous community partnerships and utilizes academic disciplines to not only engage faculty, staff, and students in mentoring and service but to benefit the central Indiana and beyond. For example, the University of Indianapolis partners with the YMCA of Central Indiana to provide high-quality, developmentally appropriate and value-based programming for over 500 youth in the Laurelwood Public Housing Community on the South side of Indianapolis.

The University's nominator wrote, “UIndy provides a structure for all mentor initiatives... a total of 41,762 community service hours were the result of students engaged in their communities for direct as well as indirect service".  Marianna Foulkrod
