Building a Service Engagement Infrastructure (BSEI) was a competitive, three-year (2007-2010) grant that served to assist 10 Indiana Campus Compact member institutions with development of a campus-based clearinghouse for service engagement, and/or other forms of community-based learning, to enhance student learning and faculty and staff development. Each campus received $22,500 from Indiana Campus Compact and $7,500 from their institutions for the research and appropriate supporting materials needed for the development of the Centers for Service Engagement that would attempt to achieve the following:
1. Serve as a clearinghouse for all service engagement learning and activities on the campus.
2. Assist faculty and staff with the development of service engagement courses and programming.
3. Conduct research in relation to service engagement.
Each institution was required to have a Steering committee for the campus development plan and implementation that included the Chief Academic Affairs Officer, the Chief Student Affairs Officer, one faculty member, one professional staff member, and one student.
Since the end of the BSEI grants in 2010, five of the 10 campuses have opened Centers for Service Engagement (or an iteration of) as a direct result of the grant program. The other five institutions have expanded, and continue to expand, their service engagement offerings through other existing departments and offices to include a holistic model of engagement.
