On a scale of one to ten, how well do you know the community you serve? Whether "community" means a hospital where you volunteer, your neighbors, or an underserved population you work with, the secret to having real impact is in understanding the individuals you want to help. Getting rooted in the public sphere requires extra effort to be intentional and invested in people, their strengths, their goals, and their opinions.
GOOD Maker and global nonprofit organization Echoing Green challenge you to deepen your relationships with the communities you're assisting. What are the best ways to invest in the people who are on the receiving end of your work? How would you foster genuine relationships with the people with whom you're working with in public service? You could host focus groups around a pancake breakfast, organize a town hall meeting, or launch an app to collect ongoing feedback. The challenge winner will get a $1,000 grant to make it happen.
Submit your idea to the Connect With Your Community challenge from now through August 8 (noon Pacific Time) to let us know how you would use $1,000 to better understand the members of the community you serve. Voting will run from August 9 to August 22. The top-voted submission will receive a $1,000 grant and a copy of Echoing Green's Work on Purpose book signed by Lance Armstrong, Doug Ulman, Cheryl Dorsey, and the book's author, Lara Galinsky.
