Pen to Paper: A Writing Retreat Focused on Writing With, For, and About Service and Engagement

Editors you will have the chance to work with at Pen to Paper 2016 include:

  • Andrew Furco, Ph.D., is co-editor of the International Journal of Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement and the Associate Editor for the Research Section of the Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement
  • Cathy Jordan, Ph.D., L.P., founding and executive director of CES4Health.info
  • JR. Jamison, MS. Ed., section editor for the International Journal of Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement
  • Danielle Leek, Ph.D., partnership representative for the Stylus Publishing, LLC. and Campus Compact publishing collaboration
  • Catherine Paterson, Ph.D., editor of the Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
  • Alexis Petri, Ed.D., editor of the Journal of Public Scholarship in Higher Education
  • Randy Stoecker, Ph.D., associate editor of the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning

Participants are able to choose from one of the following tracks:

Planning to Write—for those beginning to strategize about developing future research and writing project(s). These individuals have chosen a research/writing topic and/or may have begun the research process, and are attending to receive feedback and assistance in developing their writing/research agenda.

Ready to Write—for those whose research is complete/nearly complete and have a writing plan, but who have not yet begun the writing process. These individuals are attending the Retreat to fully plan their writing strategy and receive guidance as they begin the writing process.

Ready to Publish—for those who have a completed/nearly completed manuscript. These individuals are attending the Retreat to receive feedback from journal editors and to learn more about the various avenues available to publish their work.

During this two-day retreat, participants will discuss ideas with editors from major publications in the field, explore publishing outlets, receive mentoring from Senior Faculty Coaches, share ideas with peers, and have the time to write

Retreat Registration Fees Include:

  • Focused programming on Thursday and Friday, including time with editors representing 6 publishing outlets in the field of service-learning and community engagement. This alone is valued at over $600!
  • Overnight accommodations for Wednesday and Thursday at a lake-side conference and retreat center
  • All meals on Thursday and Friday
  • And most importantly, a distraction-free space to focus on your writing

*A limited number of Double Occupancy rooms are available on a first come-first serve basis.

Please feel free to dress comfortably. Additionally, southern Wisconsin weather can be unpredictable during October. Early mornings or evenings may require a light jacket while afternoons could be sunny and warm, a best bet is to dress in layers. Also, it is not uncommon for rain showers to occur throughout the day.
