Community Conversation: How do we tolerate what we find intolerable? Service Learning & Social Justice in the Age of Righteous Indignation

I primarily teach First Year Seminars that incorporate Service Learning. A challenge I have recently experienced is how we help students “find their place” through course readings, writings, and service learning even when we are uncomfortable with the result. How do we as instructors balance integrity to our values with seeking to create a sense of belonging in the classroom and community with students whose view of the world differs radically from our own? How can we find a new vocabulary to convey ideas about privilege, oppression, and violence that are not overburdened ideologically? Essentially, how can we create connections and continuities across difference?
